In close co-operation with the charity, we have set ourselves the goal of raising money to buy 4000 bricks, which is enough to build a classroom. It is exciting to think that we could have this kind of an impact, and we are all very motivated to reach this target. Each brick costs 50 Cents, and to help show our progress, we have created this visual to share with our students and wider community. For every 100 bricks bought, we can complete a section of wall.

To attain the award, the school assessed the current mental health practices within the school community. Through the evaluation process, we identified gaps as well as areas of excellence and areas for improvement. Using this analysis, we developed and strengthened our practices to work towards a healthier emotional environment by prioritizing mental health to develop a positive culture that promotes mental health and wellbeing for everyone. A few examples include teaching mental health and wellbeing content through the PSHE curriculum and in assemblies; participating in Mental Health week; providing time for staff; calming corners in various classrooms and a dedicated wellbeing support room.

Wellbeing in childhood is the foundation for healthy, confident, and resilient adults. We believe that supporting the holistic needs of children and developing social-emotional skills in line with the academic growth students are engaging in is important. We also know that the mental health and wellbeing of the adults in children’s environments plays a significant role in the wellbeing of the children. By consistently embedding mental health and wellbeing initiatives in our community we proactively prioritize supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our staff and students.

Our Wellbeing Champions, pictured above, meet regularly with our Wellbeing Lead to discuss ways they can have a positive impact on the mental health and wellbeing of their peers. They are a vital part of our programme!

Dance allows people to express their feelings, thoughts, and connections through movement and rhythm. It is a fundamental aspect of every culture and has been around since time immemorial, without a single inventor. Its functions span from leisure to sacred rituals, encompassing all forms of social purposes.

Many types of dance are naturally social, like ballroom dancing, where partners move together, displaying empathy through physical contact, which fosters respect and cooperation.

Furthermore, dance helps to alleviate tension and has the potential to bring happiness and stability to individuals and groups of people, not least at school!

Here at IBIS we purposefully use dance, music and drama to enrich the culture of the school by cultivating collaboration, respect and compassion. We start in Kindergarten 3-4 years with music and dance lessons incorporating drama and performance. Music, drama and dance is a theme that runs through the whole school for all age groups. We aim at this young age to promote confidence, cooperation and above all joy, forming an all round healthy, happy and sociable child ready to take on the world before them.

Stepping into the role of Deputy Headteacher at IBIS, Kate Ferrow follows her own mother who held the same role at our school before retiring in 2010.

The welcoming atmosphere at this international school is what sets it apart, explains Mrs O’Shea: “We know that academic achievement goes hand in hand with wellbeing, and that a happy student is more likely to reach their potential. IBIS is special, and we intend to keep it that way. My focus, as I begin my first year, will be on facilitating our teachers and staff, and in helping children and families to settle and feel a valued part of our school community.”

Our advice, as a school (and in many cases as parents who have gone through this process locally), can be condensed down to a few simple to follow guidelines.

• Criteria. What do you want from a school? Knowing that in advance will help the process, and allow you to identify the school that best matches it.
• Research. Read what you can online, check reviews (with the proviso that they might not always be reliable) and, if possible, speak to friends and colleagues for their opinion.
• Visit. Go to the potential schools you have identified. Go to as many as you can and as often as you can. Visiting more than one school, at least, will allow you to have a point of comparison, and, in our experience, really highlight which school seems like the best fit.
• Question. Schools of quality and their senior leadership welcome difficult questions. Each family is different, and so are their needs, so go prepared, make a list and don’t be afraid to ask.
• Trial. The trial day is important for lots of reasons, but perhaps none more so than for finding our whether your child feels comfortable at the school. A child who feels welcome will fit in and begin making progress sooner, and a good school will prioritise their acclimatisation.
